Firefox 3 Bookmarks Rant!

So I updated to Firefox 3 the other day and have been generally impressed with the subtle but sweet updates. It certainly feels faster on the Mac than it's slow-as-a-slug predecessor.

But today I discovered a major glitch in the upgrade… all my Firefox 2 bookmarks have disappeared!? What a cack handed mistake that is.

After a quick bit of research it seems it's a known bug for those who tried out the Firefox 3 beta for a while. There is a work around but it looks like a royal pain.

Luckily - my bookmarking is a bit shoddy at the best of times and I only recently moved back over to Firefox from Safari in my game of browser tennis — so the most useful bookmarks I do have are still safe.

Anyways - let that be a small warning — back-up your bookmarks first just in case.

The only hickup I've had so far with FF3 is that mouse gestures sometimes screws up with certain gestures, seems overall to be a great improvement overall though.
Try Foxmarks http://www.foxmarks.com/
I had the same problem - if you uninstall Firefox 3 (and reboot), then reinstall it, your bookmarks should return.
I second the recommendation of the excellent Foxmarks. Personally I was distinctly unimpressed with Firefox 3, it's increased memory usage and awful 'Awesome Bar' made me downgrade to 2.0.0.14 after just a day's use.

Downgrade? Are you mad? Firefox 2 crashed all the time. FF3 is a massive improvement, a much more professional product.

Foxmarks is good but it writes over a load of shortcut keys, try the google bookmarks extension. Stores everything in your Google account, much easier.
I don't know about the Mac version as I am stuck with XP, but Firefox 2 rarely crashes on me, and when it has done it's virtually always been because of poorly-written extensions or interference from outside programs (AVG 8, I'm looking at you).

You can also change shortcuts in Foxmarks by editing the config.

I did notice 3 was faster but it wasn't enough to balance out the negatives for me.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check out the Google Bookmarks.

I'm having no troubles with FF3 aside from the initial problem, and I do like how the new bookmarks work with tagging. Very handy..... if I was that organised to use them that is.

By the way, google stopped doing the bookmarks thing. Mozilla have their own now called "Weave"
D:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\u0slblhi.default

there are the original bookmarks html files... then you can import them...
